Mojave River, Victorville
BCR Consulting LLC conducted a cultural resources assessment (Phase I), archaeological site evaluation (Phase II), and data recovery (Phase III) at a 200(+) acre project near the Mojave River in Victorville, San Bernardino County, California between 2022 and 2025. The assessment included a cultural resources records search, an intensive-level pedestrian field survey, a Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) Sacred Lands File Search, Tribal scoping, and a vertebrate paleontological resources overview. During the records search and field work, staff archaeologists identified, documented, and evaluated nine archaeological sites (eight historic-period and one prehistoric) to determine eligibility for California Register of Historical Resources listing (i.e. CEQA significance). None of the historic-period sites were eligible/significant. The prehistoric site was determined eligible/significant and required preservation or, if preservation was not feasible, data recovery. Preservation was not feasible, and data recovery was completed in consultation with local Tribal entities. The data recovery revealed that the prehistoric archaeological site was a temporary camp used to process plant resources. Radiocarbon analysis revealed an occupation of 360 (+/- 30) years before present.
