On-Call Monitor
Location: San Diego, CA (Field-Based)
Pay Range: $25 - $35 / hour
The On-Call Archaeologist will perform various tasks related to archaeological fieldwork (mainly monitoring initially) on a temporary, on-call basis. Responsibilities include monitoring construction activities, conducting excavation, site surveys, documentation, data collection, and ensuring compliance with cultural resource management standards. This role will include San Diego area monitoring as well as other southern California region fieldwork. The location of your role may be flexible based on your availability and/or preference.

One year of demonstrated monitoring experience in San Diego County
Educational background in Archaeology or Anthropology
Familiarity with NEPA guidelines and associated compliance requirements
Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
Ability to work effectively in outdoor settings and variable field conditions

Experience with prehistoric and/or historic archaeological investigations
Proficiency in cultural resources monitoring (excavation, archaeological fieldwork, and site survey experience)
Knowledge of cultural resource compliance laws, including NHPA Section 106 and CEQA
Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field

The company collaborates with federal, state, and local agencies, including US Housing and Urban Development, US Army Corps of Engineers, and numerous county planning departments in California. BCR Consulting’s expertise includes compliance with cultural resource regulations such as CEQA, NEPA, and NHPA Section 106. Paleontologist Opportunities
Principal Paleontologist
Location: Claremont, California (potential for hybrid work)
Pay Range: $72,000 - $123,000, health benefits and 401k
Senior leadership role overseeing paleontology projects, staff, budgets, compliance documentation, and client and agency relationships while ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting business development on complex projects.

Managing personnel to maximize efficiency and quality of work
Scheduling staff for paleontological fieldwork
Writing scopes of work and developing budgets
Preparing/reviewing various compliance documents such as management plans and technical reports
Keeping track of project statuses and managing priority levels
Cross-training staff with varying levels of paleontological experience
Manage client and agency relationships
Keeping up to date with appropriate environmental regulations
Business development
Acting as a representative of the company

Efficiency
Intimate knowledge of the CEQA, NEPA, PRPA, and other laws and regulations governing paleontological resource management

Must meet industry-wide and federal qualification standards for Principal Investigator/Project Paleontologist/Field Director, and as principle paleontologist under Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) guidelines. Candidates must have:
Advanced degree in geology, paleontology, biology, or related field.
10 years of experience, minimum, in paleontological resource management, including project management experience
Preference will be given to those with California-based experience
Must have ability to be certified as a Principal Paleontologist in all southern California Counties that require certification.
Lead Paleontologist
Location: Claremont, California
Pay Range: $30 - $45 / hour
Leads field-based paleontological surveys, construction monitoring, excavations, and compliance programs while ensuring regulatory adherence, accurate site documentation, and effective coordination with clients and stakeholders.

Lead fieldwork activities, including paleontological surveys, testing, excavations, and compliance programs.
Oversee compliance with regulations and coordinate with clients and stakeholders in the field.
Document paleontological sites with precision and accuracy.
Construction monitoring

Bachelor’s degree in paleontology, geology, earth sciences, or a related discipline.
Proficiency in paleontological field skills, including fossil identification at a high taxonomic level, excavation, and collection techniques.
Eligibility to be listed as a “Monitor” on federal paleontological resource use permits.
Valid driver’s license and ability to operate vehicles in off-road conditions.
Willingness to travel for extended periods (typically two weeks at a time) and stay overnight.
Capability to work in adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, precipitation, and remote, challenging terrains.
Strong writing and communication skills.

Master’s degree in paleontology, geology, or a closely related field.
Advanced skills in field geology, including geologic mapping, sedimentology, depositional environment analysis, and stratigraphic column measurements.
Eligibility to be listed as an “Agent” on federal paleontological resource use permits.
Completion of geology or paleontology field school or equivalent field experience.
At least three years of experience in paleontological mitigation.
Familiarity with diverse fossil collection and preparation methodologies.
Experience in data management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
