Phase IV Cultural Resources Monitoring Project: Riverside County, California
BCR Consulting professionally conducted Phase IV Cultural Resources Monitoring at Mead Valley from 2021 through 2024. At the project's outset, our Principal Investigator facilitated a cultural resources sensitivity training in collaboration with Tribal entities. Throughout all ground-disturbing activities, a BCR staff archaeologist and a Tribal Monitor maintained on-site presence, overseeing the relocation of 16 identified site features. This relocation process was guided by a comprehensive strategy developed by our Principal Investigator and Project Manager in consultation with the involved Tribal entities, the applicant, and the County.

Key Considerations
This project required relocating bedrock milling features to new areas in consultation with two participating tribes and the developer. Challenges included selecting equipment and methods that would minimize damage to features and finding and mapping locations that would not be subject to future disturbance and would not diminish ability for land use to the satisfaction of all participating parties. The new locations had to be described and plotted in Department of Park and Recreation (DPR) 523 forms and submitted to the South Coastal Information Center (SCIC) so that future archaeologists would know that these features had been moved.
Outcome
BCR Consulting successfully managed the relocation of many prehistoric features, and the needs of tribes and the developer with minimal impacts to schedule and budget.
